Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish architect, designer, and artist and was one of the most important figures in the Modern Style, an Art Nouveau movement specific to Great Britain.
In 1894 Mackintosh was commissioned by the Glasgow Architectural Association to produce this design for one of their Conversazione Programme’s, a scholarly social gathering held for discussion of literature and the arts. The watercolour's sinuous flowing lines and floral decorations are an excellent example of Mackintosh’s art nouveau style.
