From 1917 onwards Henri Matisse spent most of his winters in the city of Nice in the South of France. He was a frequent guest at the Hôtel Mediterranée, a Rococo-style building that he used as the backdrop for many of his paintings. For this painting, Matisse has depicted a woman - thought to be his mistress and Russian model Lydia Delectorskaya - seated in front of one of the many French style shuttered windows at the hotel.
