Meet the designer
Christopher Dresser (1804-1934) is widely considered Britain's first industrial designer. Born in Glasgow and with a parallel love of botany it is his design work for which he is known. Working within and being influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement he embraced the difficulties of industrial and mechanised manufacture whilst never allowing but rather utilising the inherent dichotomy of high quality and precise manufacture in an industrial setting. His work is also widely influenced by Japanese form and shape and he is held with spearheading the fashion for Japanism in the late 19th century.
