An irresistible portrait of the great French poet Arthur Rimbaud by the wonderful American artist Jim Dine. There's so much character and expression here.Ā This poster was produced for a show at the Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1974.Ā
Dine, who is dyslexic, has written several books of his own poetry. He toldĀ Ilka Scobie on artnet.com, "I was a bad boy in school primarily because I couldnāt read well, because Iām dyslexic. And the only thing I could read was poetry 'til I was 22 and I started to read novels. But you know, poetry kept me in the world of language."Ā
JimĀ Dine was born inĀ 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, moving to New York in 1959 where heĀ became a pioneer of the HappeningsĀ movement together with Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg and Robert Whitman. Closely associated with the development of Pop artĀ in the early 1960s, DineĀ diverged from the coldness and impersonal nature of Pop by making workĀ about the personal and the quotidian. His work has been celebrated down the decades, with major retrospectives at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Guggenheim in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
